Most people have suffered from a headache at least once in their lives, and chances are they will experience another one. While never pleasant, they are usually manageable, and with a little time and maybe a little over the counter relief, all will be right in the world.

However, headaches have an ugly cousin, and they go by the name of migraines. While a migraine is a type of headache, you only need speak with a person who suffers from them to know that they can be completely debilitating.

When you’re in the midst of a migraine, you may find yourself looking for a quiet, dark place to rest. This is because both loud noises and bright lights can either trigger a migraine or make the pain worse. Sometimes even a little bit of light or noise can be irritating and make the migraine more difficult to handle. Additionally, smells may be more intense when you’re in the throes of a migraine. Plus, even if you don’t have a migraine, a smell can trigger one. For example, if you walk by a perfume counter, the smell of the perfume can bring on a migraine.

This leads us to another distinguishing factor among migraines and it is that there is a variety of them, all ultimately relating back to their root cause.

For example, women can experience menstrual migraines, as well as there are ocular migraines, hemiplegic migraines, silent migraines, and cluster headaches to name a few. However, as different as these types of migraines are, they all have one thing in common – they cause pain.
