Pink eye is the name for the medical condition officially known as conjunctivitis. Pink eye is highly contagious and it can affect one or both eyes. Several things can cause this condition, including viral and bacterial infections. It’s important to note that there are a variety of symptoms associated with pink eye. Some individuals may have most of them while others may have only a few. Some of the symptoms may also be signs of other infections as well.

Pink eye often resolves itself withing a few days without any treatment required, but many go to the doctor just in case. If the eye issue is due to an allergic reaction, then the physician will likely treat it with antihistamines. If it has developed as a result of an infection, then most patients will be prescribed antibiotic eye drops to shorten their illness.

Experts report that it is imperative to avoid wearing contact lenses during a break out of conjunctivitis, as it will only worsen or aggravate the condition. Wear glasses instead until the condition clears up, and always try to steer clear of putting on makeup around the eyes to give them ample time to heal.
