Time to put down that beer, slowly. According to a recent study, the extra fat you have around your belly could be more fatal that being overweight or obese. This is a huge revelation, considering the research that supports the increased health risks of being overweight, which includes a higher chance of having a stroke, diabetes, or a heart attack.

CNN reports that despite the fact that individuals may be fine in other areas of the body, the extra fat around one’s belly, often referred to as a beer belly, just might be fatal. Currently, doctors look at a patient’s body mass index (BMI) to calculate body fat depending on their weight and height. Still, with this new study, doctor’s may now be taking a closer look at what has built up around a person’s waist.

At the end of the day, the study, which has been published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, provides an insight on the importance of nutrition and exercise. The research reviewed data from approximately 15,000 individuals. The results revealed that beer-bellied males have a doubled risk of mortality, versus those who were simply obese or overweight. Their female counterparts with the same belly issue, had an increased risk of death by 1.5 times.

What is it about a beer belly that makes it deadly? The fact that the fat around your abdomen area can hang inside your body, wrapping round important organs. An individual’s liver can take fat from this area, turning into cholesterol, and seeping into the bloodstream, where it can gather in the arteries. The ultimate result?
