It’s incredible how far technology has come over the years and despite the fact that many may have read the headline to this article twice (or three times) to try and wrap their head around it, it is true. A woman, hailing from Spain, recently gave birth to twins at 64 years of age.
The news comes from the Hospital Recoletas Burgos, in Burgos Spain, where it is being reported that the woman in her 60s recently had a C-section, producing twins: a girl and boy. The hospital is reporting that all three, mom and babies, are in good health.
So, how did this impossible feat come to be? It seems the woman headed to the United States first for an IVF treatment and then came back to Spain to deliver the twins. Even more amazing than a 64-year-old having twins is the fact that this isn’t the first time she’s done this at Recoletas. She had her first child there at the age 58, about six years prior.
CNN reported that while it is uncommon for women over the age of 50 to get pregnant and have babies, it is certainly not impossible. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 600 babies were born in 2012 to women from ages 50-54. Which has come a long way from the same type births in 1997, where a mere 144 infants were born.
Hollywood seems to also be taking this leap in this regard, with the rich and famous increasingly diving into pregnancies later in life. Singer/actress Janet Jackson is a fine example, recently having her first baby earlier this year, at 50 years of age.
Regardless, despite the fact that advances in fertility treatments have opened a whole new world for older moms, there are still many risks around the entire process.
Vice chairman, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Mark Sauer, chimes in on this stating that some of the hardest late-in-life pregnancies stories often go untold. Dr. Sauer notes that older women sometimes don’t get pregnant, or they miscarry, and sadly at times they have a disabled child when they gift birth, where older moms (at 50 or 55) need to deal with the circumstances. He goes on to state that older women who seek these types of treatments need to prepare themselves for any and all situations that may spring up.
