Many people would argue that life is a lot easier today than it was 100 years ago. Through the advent of technology, many of the hardest and most menial of jobs have been taken away or made easier, allowing us to focus our pursuits on other things. However, while many of the tough jobs from years past may be behind us, it seems as though one the whole, mankind is getting more and more stressed out.
Stress has been linked to numerous health problems, from lacks of sleep, muscle tension, and upset stomach, to more serious conditions like a weakened immune system, anxiety or chronic depression. However, according to research published in the Psychosomatic Medicine, it was shown that emotional and physical intimacy in couples can actually lower stress levels.
In an unrelated study published in the Biological Psychology journal, it was found people who participated in sex had lower stress-related blood pressure when public speaking. On the inverse, those who abstained from sex actually had the highest blood pressure levels triggered by stress, especially while public speaking. Although it isn’t entirely clear, most doctors and researchers agree that this calming effect of sex has something to do with the hormone oxytocin.
