Lifetime Fitness Centers Putting A Ban On Cable News Viewing During Workouts

In 2018 thousands are hoping to not hear anything about politics anymore, and are willing to go to any length to keep that promise to themselves, even at the gym. Nationwide health club chain, Lifetime Fitness, has recently exercised this right by putting an end to cable news streaming on their televisions that are placed all over the facilities.

The fitness center chain released that they are banning CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and CNBC on the televisions as a result of club members complaining about wanting a more “family friendly” environment. In a recent article on USA Today, many seem to feel that this only adds to the stigma that Americans cannot handle a difference in opinion, or a small political debate from time to time. Is that truly the issue at hand here? Maybe gym goers just don’t feel like mixing working out with politics? Perhaps it ruins their mental focus while grinding out their daily run, or lifting when they see a heated debate on television. Regardless, it’s an interesting business decision with the vast membership age range being between the ages of 18 and 34 years old, which is also the largest group that of adults that do rely on other sources to get their daily news, versus the main stream news channels. In that sense, it probably was a wise move on their part just managing their client/business relations.

Considering they’ve advised they’re aiming to make the facility more family friendly, it will be interesting to see what they fill replace the news channels with on their televisions. Will it be a healthy source of television for all to view? Guess time will tell, but ultimately, most don’t obtain their political views from their fitness clubs anyway, so continue to feel that burn and get yourself some quality headphones to blur the rest out at the gym.
