One Houston Doctor Is Urging Folks To Always Wear Sunglasses This Summer

There is no shortage of public awareness when it comes to the topic of skin cancer, as millions of people know all too well the dangers of being outside all day in the sunshine without wearing adequate sunscreen. Do as many people take protecting their eyes from the sun’s rays just as serious? Probably not, as you can go to the beach at any time of the day, and still see hundreds of people happily laying in the sun with no eyewear on. The interesting part is that you only get one set of eyes in your lifetime, so why isn’t everyone taking excellent care of them? Well, the truth of the matter seems to be that most just haven’t been exposed to the dangerous, long term effects that sun damage can cause to the eyes, but one doctor in Houston is diligently trying to change that.

Dr. Sumitra Khandelwal, who is a professor at the Baylor College of Medicine reports that those seeking to protect their eyes should be shopping for sunglasses that offer 100% UVAB protection for the best possible coverage. She advises that this isn’t just for protecting the eyes, as the skin surrounding the eyes is also extremely thin, and delicate making it an ideal place for tiny cancers to develop. Are you a fan of polarized glasses? While she admits they are a good step in protection, and they reduce glare, they make it very challenging to do other activities such as reading from your smart phone. This equates more people taking the polarized variations off and wearing them on their head to conduct reading, or using tablets at the beach, eliminating the whole point of wearing the glasses in the first place.

Another plus she vocalized in the article featured on Baylor College of Medicine, Sumitra indicates that wearing sunglasses additionally protects against cataracts. She also encourages all parents to provide sunglasses for children as well, as you can never start protecting their precious eyes soon enough.
